Migraines and Obesity - Is there a link?

It 'been a lot of hype in the media lately about obesity and migraines. The AHS (American Headache Society) has a brief statement on its website states that there are no correlations at this time. BUT .. few studies over the past two years has published some discussion about obesity and migraines have generated in the neurology community.

A study published in 2005, by Dr. Marcelo Bigal, noted that while the prevalence of migraine is not in a specific context, body mass index(Body Mass Index), an increase in BMI resulted in an increased frequency of migraines. While fat people no longer had headaches of thin people, those who had the weight gain was an increase in the frequency of migraines.

Another study by Dr. Andrew Hershey at Cinncinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center showed that 91% of obese children had migraine.

What does this mean for you, migraineur? Well, it might be a couple of things to be here. If youobese, you are less likely to exercise. Overweight people tend to eat more than just a lack of exercise and diet can play a role. Reduction of food triggers, and increasing aerobic exercise three times a week has shown that reducing the frequency of migraine attacks.

Obese migraineurs are 4 times more likely to suffer depression, too! Up to 85% of people with chronic pain tend to have depression or anxiety to a certain extent. This leads to apathy and less movement which results in weight gain.This is associated with migraine, including pain fibers and the fibers are closely associated with mood in the brain. Therefore, training time not only to reduce weight, but also the frequency of migraine.

Wait! How does this happen? Serotonin! These receptors in the brain are involved in migraine. With increasing exercise, the levels of serotonin and the theory ... more serotonin, less headaches.
